Cojuangcos will be divested of Luisita by the people's government--CPP
November 18, 2004
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today said that "divesting the Cojuangco family of its vast feudal properties" will be "among the first acts" of the revolutionary people's democratic government upon its establishment on a nationwide scale.
CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal explained that such an act will be in line with the full implementation of the revolutionary land reform law which seeks to "finally free the peasantry from the centuries-old feudal oppression which has been the basis of the immense wealth of the Cojuangcos and other big hacienderos."
Under the democratic people's government, poor peasants, farm and rural factory workers will be the foremost beneficiaries of the revolutionary land reform law, said Rosal.
Calling on the Cojuangco-owned CAT and HLI to "act with dispatch" on the demands of factory and farm workers, Rosal said: "The November 16 Luisita massacre and the continued adamant refusal of the Cojuangcos to negotiate and grant the just demands of the factory and farm workers of Central Azucarrera de Tarlac and Hacienda Luisita Inc. will be aggravating factors in the divestment proceedings against the Cojuangcos that will be conducted by the revolutionary people's government."
Rosal explained that in accordance with the revolutionary land reform law, landlords who have not committed crimes against the people, who have shown willingness to address the concerns of the peasantry and cooperate in the implementation of land reform will be allowed to maintain some property for personal use, to establish industries and own a piece of land for tilling.
No such consideration, however, will be given to despotic landlords, especially those who have incurred blood debts against the peasant masses.
