Malaria

 Basahin ang artikulong ito sa Pilipino

Malaria should be easy to cure. But it remains one of the most widespread diseases in the Philippines. Up to 40,000 people a year are stricken with the disease;

20-25% of those who contract it die. Malaria is caused by any one of the bacteria Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax or Plasmodium malariae. Seventy-five percent (75%) of the types of malaria common in the Philippines is caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which is also the most fatal.

Malaria spreads through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. This mosquito thrives in temperatures of 16-30C, usually in areas that are humid or receive a lot of rainfall. It usually bites from midnight to dawn. Malaria epidemics spread and persist in areas where there is wholesale destruction of the forest due to excessive logging. With the balance of nature destroyed, the Anopheles mosquito resorts to attacking humans.
