New taxes will spell "political death" of Arroyo regime

The imposition of new taxes by the Arroyo government will spell its "political death", according to the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

"Considering Arroyo's hard-headed position to impose additional taxes on an already overburdened people, her regime will likely suffer an ignominious end, just like the detested Marcos and Estrada regimes that were overthrown by the Filipino people," said CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal.

Rosal issued the statement in reaction to President Gloria Arroyo's warning of a "painful economic death" within two years unless new taxes are approved and implemented.

Rosal accused Arroyo of passing on the government's burden to the people--a burden that, Rosal said, resulted from her own destructive economic policies. He said that in the past 10 years, the Filipino people have been suffering from the destructive effects of the policies of liberalization, privatization, deregulation and denationalization.

"It is these same policies that are among the principal reasons behind the government's fiscal crisis. After granting foreign big corporations incentives and tax exemptions in exchange for their investments, the government is now left with an empty bag," Rosal added.

"Now Arroyo wants to make the people pay for the catastrophe she has created," Rosal said. ###
