CPP condemns Arroyo for statement on Iraq
October 26, 2004

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) blasted President Gloria Arroyo for "insensitivity" for stating yesterday that the US war against Iraq was "beneficial" to the Philippines.

CPP spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said the statements reeked of utter callousness to the plight of millions of Iraqis victimized by the unjust US war of agression.

Rosal said he found it obscene for Arroyo to be singing hallelujahs to the US war on Iraq, given that the Iraqi people are now suffering from grave hardships and social and religious turmoil due to the violence unleashed by the US.

He noted that Arroyo had issued her statement even as the US itself has acknowledged that there was no evidence that then Iraqi President Saddam Hussein harbored "weapons of mass destruction".

Rosal also said that Arroyo's statement served to isolate the Philippines from the international community where there was overwhelming consensus on the baselessness and injustice of the US war against Iraq.
