Arroyo cannot fool the people about economy -- CPP
November 4, 2004
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today said that no amount of lies from Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo could convince the people that the country is now on the road to economic recovery.
CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal was reacting to Arroyo's declaration that the country has managed to wiggle its way out of the fiscal crisis.
Calling Arroyo's statement "preposterous," Rosal said that the people "can never be fooled into believing such baseless claims." It is the workers and peasants who know firsthand the real conditions of the economy, said Rosal.
He wondered how Arroyo could make people believe statements about an economic turnaround when unemployment remains rampant and prices of basic goods and services stay beyond the reach of the toiling masses.
Rosal said the economic crisis will continue to worsen and wreak havoc on the people because Arroyo was a "fanatic of 'free market' globalization." She insists on carrying out imperialist-imposed measures and passing on their deleterious effects to the toiling masses instead of addressing the roots of the economic crisis, said Rosal.
He cited the oil deregulation law that has given oil companies a free hand to impose repeated increases in the prices of oil products, and the energy deregulation law that has resulted in incessant increases in electricity rates.
Rosal said the people were "painfully aware" of these "grim realities" and would "certainly scoff" at claims of an economic recovery.
