CPP pays tribute to Salamat Hashim
August 5, 2003
The Communist Party of the Philippines expressed condolences to the family and comrades of the late Hashim Salamat, who chaired the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Salamat, who founded the MILF in 1978 the wake of the Tripoli Agreement after being disillusioned with the Moro National Liberation Front's capitulationism, died of natural causes last July 13.
In a statement, CPP spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal hailed Salamat's militancy and revolutionary leadership, calling him a "great fighter and leader of the Moro people."
The CPP praised Salamat for reinvigorating the Moro people's revolutionary armed struggle and successfully thwarting attempts by the Estrada and Arroyo regimes to crush the MILF militarily or lure it to surrender through the peace negotiations.
The CPP also cited a "fruitful alliance with the MILF" formalized in 1999 but actually spanning more than two decades. Salamat, said Rosal, was very open to the formation of a "national revolutionary united front" of the two organizations which have both been leading armed revolutionary movements against the Philippine government for more than three decades.
Rosal also welcomed the assumption of Al Haj Murad to the MILF's chairmanship, saying that he was also a "friend and ally." Rosal said the CPP looked forward to the "continuing positive relationship and cooperation between the CPP-NDF-NPA and the MILF-BIAF" under Murad.
