Ridiculous, CPP says of NOLCOM accusations
March 15, 2005

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today assailed Northern Luzon Command (AFP-NOLCOM) chief Gen. Romeo Dominguez for recent statements accusing the New People's Army (NPA) of responsibility for the string of murders of activist supporters of Hacienda Luisita strikers.

"Ridiculous and slanderous" were CPP spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal's reaction to General Dominguez's claims. Calling Dominguez a "compulsive liar," Rosal asked how "anyone could believe the same general who gave a highly dubious account of a siege in Lamitan, Basilan in 2001 to cover up the collusion between the AFP and Abu Sayyaf that enabled the latter to escape a tight military cordon." "He lied about Basilan, and he is now lying about the murders of Abelardo Ladera and Fr. William Tadena," said Rosal.

Ladera, a Tarlac City councilor and Tadena, an Aglipayan priest, both prominent supporters of the Hacienda Luisita strikers, were recently killed within days of each other by suspected military men. Another supporter, peasant leader Marcelino Beltran, was likewise murdered in December.

Rosal moreover cited findings by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) pointing to military and police elements as the culprits in the Hacienda Luisita carnage of November 16.

"Only the big landowners of Hacienda Luisita and their minions in the AFP-Nolcom benefit from the elimination of activist supporters of the strikers," Rosal said. "They want to cow the workers to submission in order to end the strike."
