Arroyo making a mockery of Philippine independence
June 12, 2003

The Communist Party of the Philippines today slammed the Arroyo regime of making a mockery of Philippine independence.

In a statement on the occasion of the June 12 Philippine Independence Day celebrations, CPP spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said that "Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is going through the motions of celebrating Philippine independence but what she is actually celebrating is her barefaced puppetry to US imperialism." Rosal added that Arroyo "has the dubious distinction of having made Philippine independence more of a sham than ever."

Rosal rated Arroyo as one of, if not the most, obsequious puppets of US imperialism. He attributed this to Arroyo's "series of shameless acts of total servility to every whim of her master, US President Bush."

Rosal said that since assuming office, Arroyo has debased national sovereignty, promoted more and more US military, political and economic intervention in the Philippines, followed every dictate of the US to launch all-out counterrevolutionary war and scuttle peace talks with the revoutionary forces and given total support to the US imperialism's war of expansionism and aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq in the name of "anti-terrorism."

He added that despite the absence of big US military bases in the Philippines, US intervention today "has become more insidious and far-reaching and in fact more blatant."

Rosal pointed out that in line with its strategic interests, the US has maintained permanent military presence in the Philippines in the guise of Balikatan military excercises and facilitated by such agreements as the Mutual Defense Treaty, VFA and MLSA.

"Aside from the controversial joint military operations of Philippine and US forces against the Abu Sayyaf," said Rosal, "military intervention has been further intensifying as the US government and Arroyo regime have been colluding to eventually allow US troops to engage in direct combat against the revolutionary forces led by the CPP and the MILF."

In an earlier statement, Rosal also condemned the agreement entered into by the Arroyo government with the US government to guarantee the immunity of US soldiers and nationals in the Philippines from prosecution by the International Criminal Court, calling it "another of Arroyo's shameless act of pupperty."

Rosal alo recalled that it is the US, through its local agency the Agile, that has been behind all the major laws enacted during the past three years or so. ###
