PRESS RELEASE Information Bureau Communist Party of the Philippines
CPP encourages anti-VAT protests
January 31, 2005
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today hailed declarations by militant groups and other oppositionists that they would be conducting street protests to oppose a pending bill to raise VAT rates, saying "that the Arroyo regime's adamance in imposing added tax burdens on the people has left them with no other recourse but to carry out mass protest actions."
CPP spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal issued the statement in reaction to a recent call by Malacaang to groups opposed to the VAT increase to refrain from launching street protests.
"The Filipino people seethe with anger over the Arroyo regime's insistence on causing more suffering to an already overburdened people," said Rosal. "In the same vein, the regime refuses to raise wages, cuts back on social spending and squanders funds to pay the Philippines' onerous foreign debt."
Rosal warned the Arroyo regime that continued refusal to heed the demand to junk the VAT bill may lead to an anti-VAT uprising capable of putting an end to the Arroyo government.
