Heightened protests in 2005 may lead to GMA ouster
December 31, 2004

For causing the "worsening oppression of the Filipino people," the Arroyo regime will face "heightened protests" in 2005 "which may lead to its downfall."

Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said that the Arroyo regime is poised to cause greater hardships on the Filipino toiling masses next year by countering wage increases, cutting down on government health and other social services and imposing additional tax burdens, thus causing oil prices and electricity rates to rise."

"By worsening the oppression of the people, the Arroyo regime is triggering widespread outrage and stirring the masses to unite and demand its ouster," Rosal said.

"The workers and peasants are further enranged over the massacres and murders committed by the Arroyo regime this year. Arroyo is remorseless over the Hacienda Luisita Massacre," Rosal said. "In the face of more mass protests, the military and police are bound to commit more murders and massacres in an effort to terrorize the people and preserve Arroyo's hold on power."

Rosal added that the Filipino people are likewise angered by the Arroyo government's increasing subservience to foreign monopoly corporations and foreign creditors as well as its complete servility to the US government on which it relies for political and military support. Such subservience, he said, is detrimental to the people's interests.

He cited the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the legality of the Mining Act of 1995 which allows big foreign mining companies to ravage the country's already sparse forest cover in search of minerals.

The ruling, said Rosal, not only violates the Filipino people's sovereign right to the country's national patrimony. "The plunderous operation of foreign big mining companies is bound to cause more devastating floods and landslides in the years to come."

Rosal reiterated the call of the CPP leadership calling for intensified tactical offensives in the next year. "Among the principal targets of these armed offensives are the worst human rights violators, the most corrupt officials and biggest plunderers of the environment."
