Soldiers abduct peasant youth on Christmas eve in Cagayan

Elements of the 21st Infantry Battalion abducted 25 year old farmer Marvin "Piltok" Mendez on December 24, 2007 in Barangay Virginia, Piat, Cagayan.

Mendez, a native of Barangay Villagracia, Maddela, Quirino province, was in Piat to visit his friends when operating troops of the 21st IB forcibly took him to their camp in Barangay Virginia. Witnesses claim they saw uniformed soldiers tagging Mendez with them, in gunpoint, at Barangay Lipatan, Sto. Nino, Cagayan. He was last seen in the 21st IB camp in Barangay Virginia on December 25.

Mendez remains missing until now.

His abduction is among the 5th Infantry Division's violations of the Arroyo government's ceasefire declaration for the Christmas holidays. The 5th ID has been operating in numerous towns of Cagayan and Isabela since the first week of December up to the present.###
