AFP is afraid of independent forensic experts
April 4, 2002

The Communist Party of the Philippines today accused the AFP of obstructing the conduct of a proper investigation of human remains unearthed from a supposed mass grave in Quezon.

In a statement, CPP spokesperson Gregorio Ka Roger Rosal reacted to a statement by Southern Luzon Command chief Gen. Ernesto Carolina dismissing the CPPs call for an independent forensic investigation of the remains.

Rosal said that the AFP refused to bring in forensic experts because their findings would belie the AFP's tales about the so-called mass graves.

According to Rosal, Gen. Carolina showed utter ignorance of the work of forensic experts when he stated that the only thing they could do is estimate the approximate time of killing. Rosal said that forensic experts, if given access to sufficient evidence, can also determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the deaths of the persons whose remains were unearthed by the AFP. Rosal futher said that forensic experts would also be able to determine whether the military has made up the evidence to fit their story.
