“US intervening even in the movies”--CPP
June 8, 2003

“They are in fact blatantly intervening all over in Philippine affairs. Now, add outright cultural intervention to military intervention.”

This was the statement of Communist Party of the Philippines spokesperson Gregorio “Ka Roger” Rosal in reaction to the US request for a special review of the movie “Operation Balikatan” which will be shown at the Manila Film Festival starting June 11.

US Navy Capt. Dennis Williams, in charge of Balikatan public affairs, had requested Premiere Productions through the Office of the Press Secretary for special preview of "Operation Balikatan" this weekend at the US Embassy, the Department of National Defense in Camp Aguinaldo or at the OPS in Malacañang.

The OPS explained that the American soldiers are worried they might be depicted as meddling in the military affairs of the Philippines.

“What right do they have to check first before public screening ‘if the film conforms to the information operation of the media campaign of the Balikatan’, as the OPS euphemistically worded the US officials’ rationale?” Rosal asked.

“In trying hard to hide the fact that they are indeed interventionists, they have become more obvious as interventionists. Now the US is intervening even in the movies.” Rosal added, “Filipinos are now tripping with US intervention all over—from economic intervention via AGILE, to military intervention via Balikatan, plus this latest cultural intervention via a ‘special preview’ of the ‘Operation Balikatan’ movie.” ###
