CPP slams passage of additional alcohol and cigarette taxes
October 30, 2004
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today slammed the House of Representatives for passing a bill that would raise taxes on cigarettes and alcohol products.
CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal noted that the tax bill was passed with an overwhelming vote, indicating that majority of congressmen are "reactionary politicians who, despite having differing party affiliations, are united in oppressing the Filipino people."
Rosal also lambasted Philippine President Gloria Arroyo for invoking "patriotism" in pushing the Senate to pass a counterpart law imposing additional taxes on cigarettes and alcohol.
"Imposing an additional tax burden on Filipino consumers can never be an act of patriotism, just as government cutbacks in health and education spending and Arroyo's refusal to raise wages and salaries are not acts of patriotism," Rosal said.
The approved bill will raise taxes on cigarettes and alcohol products by 20% in the first year and an additional 3% in the second and third years.
