CPP mulling unilateral ceasefire declaration
December 17, 2004
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today announced that it is studying the possibility of declaring a unilateral ceasefire for Christmas and the New Year and will issue an official statement in the coming days.
CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said the CPP is "considering the possibility of a ceasefire in deference to the people's traditional observance of the holidays, and to allow the revolutionary masses to celebrate the 36th anniversary of the CPP on December 26."
Rosal said that revolutionary forces are preparing to celebrate the upcoming CPP anniversary through educational activities, cultural presentations and mass meetings to discuss the past year's victories.
Rosal added that NPA units in the calamity-struck areas of northern Quezon and Aurora province are observing a "virtual ceasefire" as they "concentrate their efforts on rehabilitation work, even as they maintain their alertness against AFP offensive operations."
Meanwhile, Rosal congratulated NPA Red fighters under the Josepino Corpuz command for their successful tactical offensives the past two weeks. He noted that the NPA in Central Luzon was able to seize 28 firearms from these offensives.
"These weapons will be able to arm the growing number of NPA Red fighters," Rosal added.
