Updates of NPA-AFP battles in Eastern Visayas (January-June 2008)

July 3. Calbiga, Samar. Two elements of the 34th IB were wounded in a sniping operation by Red fighters of the Jovito Ragay Command in Barangay Buluan.

June 10. Catbalogan, Samar. A soldier belonging to the 46th IB was killed in a successful harassment operation by the NPA in Barangay Cagusipan.

June 6. Jipapad, Eastern Samar. NPA guerrillas seized an M16 and a Garand after a firefight with 14th IB troops along the boundary of Barangay San Roque and Barangay Cagmanaba. Three soldiers were killed in this gunbattle.

May 17. Motiong, Samar. A soldier was killed and another trooper wounded in an encounter between Red fighters of the Arnulfo Ortiz Command and a platoon of the 46th IB in Barangay Sto. Ni�o. The Red guerrillas seized two M14 rifles. The NPA sustained zero casualties.

May 17. Lapinig, Northern Samar. A soldier under the 453rd Engineering Brigade was killed in an ambush by Red fighters of the Silvio Pajaris Command in Barangay Imelda.

May 15. Las Navas, Northern Samar. Eight soldiers were killed while the NPA did not suffer a single casualty in an ambush by the Rodante Urtal Command (RUC) of the NPA-Northern Samar against troops of the 63rd IB Charlie Coy at around 12:00 noon along the boundary of Barangays Imelda at Catotoogan.

May 16. Gamay, Northern Samar. Four soldiers were killed in an ambush by Red fighters of the Silvio Pajares Command in Barangay Bangon.

May 16. Northern Samar. A special operations group under the Nida Cantong Command meted punishment on an intelligence officer of the AFP.

April 24. Motiong, W. Samar. Red fighters of the Efren Martires and Arnulfo Ortiz Commands conducted a harassment operation lasting almost 20 minutes against the headquarters of the 46th IB Alpha Company in Barangay Calapi at around 8:00 p.m.

April 29. Catarman, Northern Samar. Partisans under the RUC hurled a home-made grenade at the PNP provincial headquarters in Catarman, capital of Northern Samar. There was a loud explosion inside the compound but the policemen denied the grenade-thowing incident and claimed it was from a busted transformer.

April 19. Bobon, Northern Samar. Red fighters under the Nida Cantong Command conducted a sniping and harassment operation on the camp of the 20th IB Charlie Coy in Barangay Trojillo while the soldiers were lined up for their morning exercises

April 12. San Isidro, Northern Samar. The enemy suffered an undetermined number of casualties after a unit under the Rodante Urtal Command conducted a harassment operation against the headquarters of a company under the 52nd IB in Barangay Salvacion.

April 12. Catarman, Northern Samar. Two soldiers were killed in harassment and sniping operations by the Nida Cantong Command in Barangay San Juan against operating troops of the 20th IB.

April. Laoang, N. Samar. Escapees from the provincial hail ceded to the Silvio Pajares Command a baby M16 and a shotgun.

March 24. Oras, Eastern Samar. Eight soldiers were killed in Barangay Cagtoog in a defensive action involving up to 30 Red fighters of the Lopito Mengote Command and more than 50 soldiers of the 14th IB Bravo Company. The soldiers were out to raid the Red fighters but the guerrillas fired the first shot. They later received reinforcements from another NPA unit nearby. A Red fighter was killed in a hour-and-a-half long firefight.

March 23. Oras, E. Samar. A special operations group under the Sergio Lobina Command meted punishment on Dexter Muros, a former lieutenant under the 14th IB who continued to be actively involved in enemy operations and was responsible for killing and torturing several civilians.

March 20. San Jorge, W. Samar. Red fighters under the Serafin Pasimos Command sniped soldiers of the 46th IB, killing a trooper and wounding another soldier.

March 3. Motiong, W. Samar. Guerrillas under the Arnulfo Ortiz Command ambushed a squad under the 46th IB in Barangay Maypange, killing four soldiers and wounding three others, including Lt. Leonard Orbase, the unit commander. The NPA seized three M16s, an M14 and two short firearms.

March 2. San Isidro, Northern Samar.Red fighters meted the death penalty on Sgt. Nandy Nier, intelligence officer of the 20th IB and leader of a death squad. The sergeant, who was meted punishment in Barangay Balite, was responsable for the murders of four peasants in the area from 2007 to 2008. One of the victims was Tony Jumadiao, a resident of Kilometer 11, Happy Valley, San Isidro.

February 11. Motiong, W. Samar. Red fighters under the Arnulfo Ortiz Command conducted sniping operations against a squad under the 46th IB Alpha Coy that was in Barangay Malubago to conduct RSOT operations. The military forces were then sleeping in a house that had no other occupants. Pvt. Arnel Jacinto was wounded. The terrified soldiers left the barrio that same night, forcing the villagers to evacuate their homes so they could be used as human shields.

February 9. Villareal, W. Samar. Six soldiers were killed in an ambush by Red fighters of the Arnulfo Ortiz Command.

February 5. San Jorge, W. Samar. Red fighters under the Serafin Pasimos Command sniped a squad under the 46th IB Alpha Coy in Barangay Moboob, killing a soldier and wounding another trooper.

January 12. Catubig, N. Samar. Red fighters of the Rogelio Bantillo Command confiscated an M1 Garand from the barangay captain of Barrio Magtuad. The barangay captain was on the payroll of a politician.
