Oust demand hangs over Arroyo's head as she plays token role in UN Security Council meet-CPP
September 12, 2005
The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today twitted the token role of Philippine President Gloria Arroyo as she presides over the meeting of the United Nations Security Council this September. In delivering her much-vaunted address, Arroyo is actually just taking her turn in the monthly rotation of presiding officers from the council's non-permanent members.
"Arroyo presiding over the UN Security Council this month is just like a little kid playing the role of 'little mayor' during a city's anniversary day," said CPP spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal.
The UN Security Council has five permanent members-the US, UK, Germany, France, China and Russia-the world's most powerful countries. Ten other slots are allocated to non-permanent members, and these are rotated every two years on a geographical basis. The role of presiding officer is rotated monthly among them. The Philippines' term as a non-permanent member ends in December this year.
Rosal said that US Pres. George W. Bush worked for the inclusion of the Philippines as a non-permanent member of the council in the last four months of a supposed two-year term shared with other countries "in return for Arroyo's obseqious support for the US' global terrorism and aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq in the name of 'anti-terrorism'."
The CPP spokesperson said that the demand for Arroyo's ouster will hang over her head as she assumes her token role of presiding over the council. "The mass movement and protest actions to oust Arroyo will not dissipate. They will escalate further as she live out her pretensions of leading a meeting of the world's most powerful countries."
With her utter arrogance and complete disregard for the widespread clamor for her resignation, said Rosal, Arroyo's pretentiousness will surely inflame the people's disgust and determination to put an end to her rule.
