AFP using NPA bogey to threaten mass demonstrations--CPP

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today deplored as a "threat to suppress mass demonstrations" the so-called intelligence briefing by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) claiming that Red fighters of the New People's Army (NPA) are in Metro Manila planning to participate in mass actions against the Arroyo regime.
CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said the AFP statements constitute a threat by the Arroyo regime to clamp down on democratic mass demonstrations using the full weight of the state's violent instrumentalities.
He dismissed as "baseless, irresponsible and extremely unintelligent" the accusation that NPA fighters are in Metro Manila to join mass demonstrations against the Arroyo government.
Rosal said that using the NPA bogey is "a narrow-minded attempt of the US-Arroyo regime to justify the iron-fist policy in dealing with mass actions as seen in the violent dispersal of the demonstration on April 7".
Demonstrators demanding a stop to the Arroyo regime's political repression were violently dispersed by the police outside the Malate Church in Manila. Several Catholic priests were hurt and arrested.
"The Arroyo regime is doing a Marcos in using the NPA bogey and threatening to use police and military violence against rallies to scare the people away from joining street demonstrations," Rosal added.
"Through such an AFP briefing, the Arroyo regime hopes to draw away the people's attention from the basic issues of price increases, low wages, new taxes, political repression and blind puppetry to US dictates," Rosal added.
"Nangangatog ang tuhod ni Gloria Arroyo's tuwing nakikita niya na ang mga demonstrasyong nagluklok sa kanya sa poder noong 2001 ay sumisigaw ngayon na wakasan na ang kanyang korapsyon, panunupil at pagpapakatuta sa gubyernong US," said Rosal.
