VAT increase will break the people's backs -- Ka Roger
January 13, 2005
The Communist Party of the Philippines today deplored plans to raise the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 10 to 12 percent, saying it shows the Arroyo regime's "extreme callousness" regarding the Filipino people's welfare.
Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said the "indecent haste with which the VAT increase is being pushed in congress shows that the Arroyo regime is bent on breaking the Filipino people's backs with a slew of tax measures."
"Together with the other taxes, the planned VAT increase will directly hit ordinary consumers through higher prices of commodities and services," Rosal added.
Rosal said, however, that by raising the Value Added Tax, Arroyo further stokes the flames of the people's anger. "It might prove to be the last straw that will catalyze the people into undertaking mass actions to put an end to the taxing Arroyo regime."
