Arroyo regime courting protests with additional taxes -- CPP
January 5, 2005

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today said that in imposing additional tax burdens, the Arroyo regime is instigating the Filipino people to carry out mass street protests against her regime.

CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal castigated the Arroyo government for rushing the enactment of additional tax measures even as the Filipino people suffer gravely from low wages and high prices of food, electricity and fuel.

"Arroyo manifests the elite's insensitivity to the people's plight. On the one hand, she rushes new tax measures, but on the other, she prevents wage increases and land reform and refuses to heed the widespread clamor to stop to the growing burden of servicing the country's onerous debts," Rosal said.

"Arroyo is determined to make 2005 a year of unprecedented tax burdens," he said.

"The people are enraged over the fact that they are being made to pay more taxes even as government cuts spending on health, education and other social services," Rosal said. "The taxes that the Filipino people are being made to pay are only used to service debts that have not benefited the people and line the pockets of corrupt big bureaucrats."

"In imposing more tax burdens, especially the excise tax on fuel products," added Rosal, "the Arroyo regime is inciting the people to launch protest actions calling for her ouster."
