The family and lawyers welcomed at the “guilty” verdict against the four policemen who killed Luis and Gabriel Lois Bonifacio in 2016. The killing of the two was related to the then Duterte regime’s bogus war on drugs. Like the thousands killed in this “war,” these policemen insist that the two “fought back” and were killed. The sentence is only the fourth in the face of thousands of victims in this war. They were charged with “homicide.”

“The road to justice has been very long and difficult, resulting from the efforts of the Bonifacio family, together with the organizations and individuals who supported them, and not because of the genuine efforts of the authorities,” according to the National Union of People’s Lawyers-National Capital Region, the group of lawyers handling the case.

The lawyers said the verdict proved that the state’s bloody hand was behind the Oplan Tokhang that killed thousands of the destitute. Still, it only covered four low-ranking policemen.

While the family and lawyers welcomed the case’s victory, they know this is only a “footnote” or a small part in the bloody campaign that “is not even over” as the number of victims is still increasing.

According to dahas.ph, a total of 639 cases of killings related to the illegal drug trade was recorded since Marcos Jr took office until April 30. In May, it increased by 32.
