US strikes in Syria and Iraq threaten escalation of war in Middle East

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) condemns the US imperialist government and its military forces for carrying out aerial bombing and drone strikes in at least 85 sites in Syria and Iraq which are acts of military aggression outrightly violating these countries’ sovereignty.

By staging these strikes in Syria and Iraq, the US is further escalating and widening the armed conflicts in the Middle East, which stem from the refusal of the US-supported Zionist regime in Israel to heed the global demand for a ceasefire in its relentless bombing and war of aggression in the Gaza strip.

The Biden government claims these strikes in Syria and Iraq are in retaliation for the drone attacks against a secret US military facility known as Tower 22 located at the border of northern Jordan and Syria. This and other US military facilities in Jordan, Syria and other areas are being used by the US as springboards for its interventionism in Syria and other parts of the Middle East.

In truth, in defending its military outposts, the US is asserting its arrogantly self-claimed imperialist right to project and impose its hegemony in the Middle East, in outright violation of the sovereign rights of these nations, as well as of international laws.

The US military strikes follow continuing strikes by the US and UK military in various areas in northern Yemen since January 16, as part of its support to the Zionist government of Israel in its genocidal war against the Palestinian people.
