Court dismisses case against transport and urban poor leaders
The court in Quezon City dismissed the case filed by the Philippine National Police against transportation and urban poor leaders on December 4. According to the court, there was lack of probable cause to charge PISTON’s Mody Floranda and Ruben Baylon, Kadamay’s Mimi Doringo, and Manibela’s Mar Valbuena and Regie Manlapig for violating Commonwealth Act 880 or the “No Permit No Rally” law during their August 14 transport strike. Their scheduled arraignment on December 5 was also canceled.
“This victory was announced to us on the same day that more than 70 representatives, including our National President Mody Floranda, from various organizations filed an impeachment complaint against Sara Duterte,” PISTON stated.
Commonwealth Act 880 was enacted by the current president’s father Ferdinand Marcos Sr, to suppress protests against his dictatorship.
