Filipino migrants celebrate May 1 in various countries
Led by national democratic organizations, Filipino migrants marked International Workers’ Day on May 1 in various countries.
In Hong Kong, Migrante chapters protested at the Philippine Consulate General office to demand a living wage in the Philippines and in the territory.
Progressive groups in the US joined Labor Day protests in their respective communities in Tacoma, Seattle, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland.
Filipino-American students at the University of Illinois Chicago joined a walkout led by Anakbayan to mark Workers’ Day and denounce the violent detention and deportation of immigrants in the US. They also called to recognize the university as a sanctuary campus.
Participants in the action in Tacoma paid tribute to Anakbayan member Kai Sorem, one of the Toboso 19.
Migrante members in South Korea also joined a local Workers’ Day marking on April 26. They carried the call for justice for the Taboso 19. The group also held an online discussion on the history and significance of May 1.
Migrante members in Tokyo, Japan; Rotterdam, Netherlands; London; Paris, France; Montreal, Canada; Rome, Italy; Hamburg; and Berlin also joined the commemoration.
