Agusan 6 stands firm amid relentless military harassment
Agusan 6 marked their second month of detention on August 13 amid relentless military harassment. On August 11, the military took one of them, Grace “Nik-nik” Man-aning, from Agusan del Sur Jail and transferred her to military custody without notifying her lawyers and relatives.
Witnesses said Man-aning cried and showed obvious distress as soldiers from the 60th IB forcibly took her. The transfer reportedly came from a court order, claiming she was a “high value target” and thus, the jail is unable to provide sufficient security. According to the Free Agusan 6 Network, this move aimed to intimidate her and force her to “surrender” as they did to her former comrades Sinag Lugsi and Daryl Man-inday.
The group stated that placing Man-aning under military custody seriously raises concerns about her safety and rights, and violates due process.
Despite the harassment from NTF-Elcac and the military, Agusan 6 remains strong in prison. They have not cooperated with the military, haven’t surrendered, and are actively participating in activities with fellow detainees, according to their supporters from the Free Agusan 6 Network. “Their steadfastness is a testament to their courage and the legitimacy of their cause,” the network said.
The group calls on the public and international community to extend support and demand the immediate and unconditional release of Agusan 6 and all political prisoners in the country.
Agusan 6 consists of Charisse “Chaba” Bañez, Arjie Dadizon, Ronnie Igloria, Larry Montero, Man-aning, and Louvaine Erika “Beng” Espina. They were traveling from the town of Monkayo in Davao De Oro on June 13 when their vehicle was stopped at a checkpoint and they were arrested.
On August 6, a court in Bukidnon dismissed attempted murder and murder charges against Bañez and Dadizon related to a fabricated encounter between the New People’s Army and the Armed Forces of the Philippines in 2022.
