Family, Migrante renew calls to free Mary Jane Veloso

,

Led by Migrante International and the family of Mary Jane Veloso, various groups launched a noise barrage, snake march, and press conference on June 19, at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong City to demand Veloso’s immediate release. Gabriela Women’s Party, Kadamay, Sandigan, and Bayan Muna joined the action.

The action coincided with Veloso’s statement inside the Correctional regarding the human trafficking, illegal recruitment, and estafa case she filed in 2015 against her recruiter. This is the first time she has been able to give her testimony.

“As the case against her recruiters moves forward, always remember that Mary Jane herself continues to be denied freedom. She has long endured the weight of imprisonment and separation from her family despite clear indications that she is a victim of human trafficking,” GWP representative Sarah Elago said.

Migrante chapters in various countries concurrently launched a “Global call to action to free Mary Jane Veloso now!” Migrante Japan, Migrante UK, Migrante Thailand, Migrante Taiwan, Pinatud A Saleng ti Umili, International Migrants Alliance, Migrante Canada, and Migrante Europe expressed solidarity.

The Baguio Episcopal Area of the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ in the Philippines also expressed support and prayers for Veloso’s release.

Veloso returned to the Philippines after the Indonesian government commuted her death sentence to life imprisonment in December 2024. She has been imprisoned since 2010.

“Mary Jane’s case reflects the conditions of millions of Filipinos forced to go abroad because of the lack of decent jobs, low wages, and poverty in the country. As long as the roots of forced migration are not addressed, Filipino migrants will continue to face danger from exploitation, trafficking, and other abuses,” Elago added.

“Free Mary Jane Veloso! Hold human traffickers accountable. Defend the rights of Filipino migrants,” she called.
