Pinoy immigrant confined to isolation at Northwest Detention Center
Tanggol Migrante Network Washington State Chapter with the family and friends of Maximo Londonio or Kuya Max held a press conference on June 15 outside the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) to reiterte their call for his release from the facility.
Londonio’s family said authorities transferred him on June 14 to a higher-security jail, which isolated him from other immigrants.
They said Geo Group, the company that owns NWDC, made a mistake on his profile, which triggered his transfer. The unit currently holding him is on lockdown, further restricting his movement and communication with people outside the facility.
Tanggol Migrante stated that Geo Group’s mistake in profiling Londonio is a dangerous and violent action. This could replicate the ordeal of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported to a country not of his origin.
Despite community support for Londonio, the US and Philippine governments have provided no assistance to him or his family.
The Philippine consulate visited NWDC on May 29 to check on Filipinos detained at the facility. Londonio and other detainees said the visit did not help and produced no results. When Londonio asked the officials if they would defend him, they responded that they would only follow the Trump administration’s decision.
They showed no willingness to fulfill their responsibility to protect immigrants.
Congress members Emily Randall, Pramila Jayapal, and Maxine Waters visited NWDC on May 30. They assured Londonio legal assistance, but he still has no lawyer for his upcoming court hearing.
Maria Cantwell, a US senator, promised to relay the appeals and calls for Londonio’s release to the Philippine embassy.
Tanggol Migrante called on the Philippine consulate in San Francisco and the embassy to ensure that the rights and welfare of Filipinos are upheld and to support the release of all Filipinos who are unjustly detained.
Londonio has long lived in the US. Customs and Border Protection agents arrested him on May 15 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport while he was returning to the US from the Philippines.
