Progressive organizations submit new impeachment complaint against VP Duterte
Representatives of 45 progressive organizations went to Congress on February 2 to file an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. Their complaint was endorsed by Rep. Antonio Tinio, Rep. Sarah Elago, and Rep. Renee Co of the Makabayan Coalition.
As with the complaint filed in December 2024, the accusation focused on the vice president’s betrayal of public trust. The complaint cited Duterte’s misuse of ₱612.5 million in confidential funds from the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education from 2022 to 2023. It also pointed to her gross abuse of discretionary powers, lack of proper spending control, and disregard for congressional summons.
The complaint was filed after the Supreme Court issued a final ruling declaring the earlier 2025 impeachment process against Duterte unconstitutional.
“Despite this adverse ruling, we believe that the issues raised in the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte—including her alleged culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes—remain valid and must be addressed through the proper constitutional process. The Filipino people deserve answers.”
At a press conference, Bayan Muna chairperson Atty. Neri Colmenares insisted the complaint was not “recycled,” emphasizing that Duterte was not given sufficient hearing on the accusations last year. He urged the congress members who signed the previous impeachment complaint to support the new filing.
Progressive groups protested outside Congress to support the filing of the complaint. Groups led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan filed an impeachment complaint against Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr earlier on January.
