Soldiers harass retired labor organizer in Davao
The Kilusang Mayo Uno–Southern Mindanao Region (KMU-SMR) strongly condemned the military harassment of Eduardo Capuyan, a retired labor organizer in the region.
Two men in plainclothes who identified themselves as soldiers went to Capuyan’s house on February 10 and interrogated him about certain individuals they are supposedly looking for. They badgered him with questions even after he said he did not know the whereabouts of the said individuals. The soldiers left him with a contact number.
KMU-SMR said the harassment clearly fits the NTF-Elcac’s systematic campaign of suppression under the Marcos regime’s repressive National Action Plan for Unity, Peace and Development. KMU-SMR has documented four incidents of surveillance, intimidation, and Red-tagging against Davao-based labor organizers and activists in recent months.
“This is a manifestation of the Marcos Jr regime’s disregard of workers’ freedom of association and other rights,” KMU-SMR said.
“What happened to Capuyan has happened to labor activists many times before,” the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR) said. “What the soldiers did is a clear threat to his life and security.”
