Urban poor community residents continue to fight demolition in Davao

,

Residents of Dalat/Purok 47, San Roque, Bangkal, Davao City and the Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay)-Davao staged a protest on January 15 to continue resisting and condemning the ongoing demolition in their community. Just a day prior, a backhoe and truck was sent into the community, which residents say will be used to demolish their homes.

On December 21, 2024, more than 100 hired goons violently demolished houses in the community, injuring three residents. A private company represented by Atty. Elisio Braganza is pushing for the eviction despite the said company’s lack of legal basis and documentation.

Successive demolitions and setting up fences around the community were carried out on January 8 and 11. According to Kadamay-Davao, the fence is to prevent the residents’ free movement in and out of the area. Residents, notably the community women, gathered to stop these actions by the private company’s hired personnel.

Residents assert that they have rights to the land where their homes stand. They assert having won a case of land ownership back in 2013. They also condemned the inaction and inutility of the Davao City local government for failing to stop the demolition and expel those encroaching on their land.
