Church people call on Samar residents to shun for pro-mining politicians

,

Bishop Crispin Varquez of the Diocese of Borongan called on the people of the towns of Borongan and Guiuan, Eastern Samar not to vote for candidates who support mining activities. In his pastoral letter on January 5, he urged the people to stand firm for the country and the environment.

The church and the people of Eastern Samar have long resisted mining in Guiuan, particularly in Homonhon Island. The bishop said mining has reached an alarming level. Four mining companies’ open pit mining have already denuded almost half of the island. The waters and oceans surrounding the island have become “a sea of mud”.

The livelihood of the island’s residents have been destroyed. Excess dust from the mine destroys their crops. It has also been adversely affecting their health. They no longer have a source of clean water.

The bishop called on the people not to be deceived and scrutinize the candidates well. He stressed the need to avoid political dynasties, and support leaders who are willing to sacrifice for the people.

Apart from Homonhon Island, mining companies are also targeting to excavate the nearby island of Manicani. The mineral obtained from this nickel is carried directly on ships to China.
