Filipina migrant workers in Taiwan vote to strike
Taidoc Technology Co. Ltd. workers asserted their right to strike amid the company’s blatant violations of labor laws. The violations include being forced to clean the factory, strict dormitory regulations, and unreasonable fees. This is the union’s first strike.
In the vote held on December 1, 65.79% of the workers cast their ballots, and 92% of them supported the decision to strike. The New Taipei City Government Labor Bureau recognized the vote.
The Taidoc Technology Labor Union (TTLU) is a democratic and independent union of Filipina migrant workers at Taidoc Technology Co., Ltd. It is the second union of migrant workers in the country’s history.
Migrante-Taiwan expressed strong support for the workers’ struggle.
“Your struggle is the struggle of all migrant workers in Taiwan. The decision to strike shows the strength of migrant workers who refuse to be intimidated or divided. When workers strike, migrants stand firm, and we will remain with you until justice is achieved,” the group said.
Before the election, students from the National Taiwan University Labor Society, National Chengchi University Seed Society, and National Taiwan Normal University Humanities Society protested at the Ministry of Labor on November 20. They expressed their support for TTLU’s struggle and called for punishment of Taidoc Company and protection of its migrant workers.
