Makabayan Bloc congress representatives recognized the contributions of the deceased Albay first district representative Rep. Edcel Lagman to the struggles of the people and his progressive stance. Rep. Lagman passed away at a hospital in Quezon City on January 30 at the age of 82 due to a heart attack. Representatives of the Makabayan Bloc sympathized with Lagman’s bereaved family.

The Makabayan Bloc called Lagman a “true statesman, principled legislator, and unwavering defender of human rights.” According to the group, the passing of the legislator is a great loss not only to Congress but also to the entire nation.

“As a close friend and ally of the Makabayan Bloc, he stood with us in countless battles for people’s rights and welfare,” according to a unified statement by ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro, Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Arlene Brosas and Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel.

Rep. Castro said Rep. Lagman was more than a colleague, because he served as a mentor and inspiration to many progressive legislators. “His sharp legal mind and moral courage were instrumental in defending human rights and civil liberties, especially during the darkest times,” Rep. Castro said.

“Ka Edcel is not just an ally, but a true brother in the struggle. An example of true service to the people,” Rep. Brosas said.

Rep. Lagman was among those who stood against charter change and in favor of the proposed the Anti-Enforced Disappearance Act and the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Bill. His record in defending freedom of the press and protecting democratic institutions is also outstanding.

He served as Albay’s first district representative for eight terms from 1987-1998, 2004-2013 and 2016 until his death. Rep. Lagman is also the Liberal Party president when he passed away.

For Rep. Manuel, the principles and teachings of Rep. Lagman will serve as a beacon in the continuous struggle of the youth for the rights and well-being of the Filipino people.

“We join the nation in honoring Rep. Lagman’s legacy of service and commitment to democracy,” according to the Makabayan Bloc representatives.
