National-democratic groups honor Nora Aunor
Various national-democratic organizations and sectors gave the highest tribute to the renowned artist Nora Aunor, who passed away yesterday, April 16.
Aunor became known for her powerful performances in films with patriotic and socio-political themes such as Andrea, Himala, Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo, The Flor Contemplacion Story, Thy Womb, and many others.
In her performances, Aunor embodied the stories of women, the poor, and their struggle against violence and injustice.
In 2014, the group GABRIELA, GABRIELA Women’s Partylist, and Peace for Life awarded Aunor the recognition of “artista ng bayan” (people’s artist) for her outstanding role in the film “Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo.” As an artista ng bayan, she bravely joined the advocacies of migrants, farmers, workers, and women.
According to the statement of Migrante International, “Nora Aunor is not just a superstar, she is an artista ng bayan who is ready to stand up to defend the oppressed, ready to participate in people’s struggles.” She became part of countless struggles calling for justice for victims of exploitation and fighting against severe corruption.
Her participation was highlighted in the actions during the movement to oust then-sitting president Joseph Estrada in the #ErapResign movement. Aunor also joined actions condemning the pork barrel funds, calling for justice for the victims of the Kidapawan Massacre, and justice and protection for OFWs trapped in abusive and exploitative conditions abroad.
