Opposition to Baguio City market privatization broadens
Baguio City Public Market vendors simultaneously closed their stalls on November 26 to attend a protest at Malcolm Square to save the market from privatization. Anakbayan Metro-Baguio, the Save Baguio Market Movement (SBMM) and more than one thousand individuals joined the protest.
During the protest, participants discussed the planned “mallification” and privatization of the public market, held a noise barrage, and cultural performances.
SBMM continued collecting signatures alongside the program. The group aims to gather 50,000 signatures before January 10, 2026. The group has already collected more than 20,000 signatures, which they earlier submitted to Mayor Benjamin Magalong and city councilors on November 19.
Before this protest, vendors, consumers, progressive groups, and student youth held a noise barrage inside the market on November 23. They also held a short program after the activity.
The groups plan to hold daily noise barrages in the market at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. until the privatization plan is scrapped.
The local government is set to make a final decision on the privatization plan in January next year. Around 4,000 vendors risk losing their livelihood once SM Prime Holdings mallifies and privatizes the public market.
The groups are calling on the Baguio City people to join the national day of protest against corruption on November 30 at Malcolm Square.
