Police evicts 400 families in Davao City demolition
A 500-person force including 300 police officers demolished and evicted at least 400 families, in Upper Arroyo, Barangay Matina Crossing, Davao City on May 23. The Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay)-Davao condemned the demolition.
The demolition reportedly destroyed 80 houses, affecting 60 elderly people and at least 200 children. The demolition covered an area of almost three hectares.
Kadamay-Davao reported that the demolition was carried out using a court order that covered only seven houses in the said district. The group stated that this is why other residents were shocked and alarmed when other houses were included in the demolition.
The barangay captain also revealed in a media interview that he was informed of the planned demolition only a day before it was carried out. He also admitted that the the scope of the demolition was not clearly explained.
On May 24, the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 11 concurred with the residents and issued a 72-hour temporary restraining order (TRO) to temporarily stop the demolition.
After the demolition, the affected residents stayed at the Barangay Matina Crossing gym. Davao City local agencies only provided “mobile kitchens” and food packs to those evicted and left homeless.
“We demand the government for an end to all unjust demolitions and provide decent relocation and compensation or damages for the affected families,” said Kadamay-Davao.
The group also urged their fellow poor and ordinary citizens to organize and stand up for their right to housing.
