Residents put up anti-demolition protest camp in Agora, Marikina

,

Residents of Agora Compound in Barangay Sto. Niño, Marikina City put up their protest camp again on March 14 to thwart the looming demolition of their community. The residents demanded that the Marikina local government fulfill its promise of in-city relocation.

The residents said they have not seen any legal document from the LGU guaranteeing proper relocation.

On October 15, 2025, the Marikina LGU promised relocation in Barangay Tumana. Around 54 families in Agora-harap face demolition, as well as another 54 families in Agora-garden. Agora-likod’s 37 families were already demolished earlier and are now cramped in tents beside the Agora compound.

On March 6, the Bienjiave-Castano family tried to make residents sign a prepared joint affidavit surrendering their right to stay, to push through with the demolition in Agora-harap. The affidavit labeled the groups Gabriela, Kadamay, and Anakpawis as “left-leaning groups” allegedly obstructing residents’ “voluntary transfer.”

Philippine National Police forces were visibly present in the municipal compound during the final pre-demolition conference at Marikina City Hall to intimidate residents.

Gabriela Women’s Party calls on the public to support the struggle of the residents of Agora compound.
