Teachers call to help Davao earthquake victims

Tulong Guro under the Alliance of Concerned Teachers-Davao Region XI called for immediate assistance for those affected by the series of strong earthquakes in the Davao Region, which reportedly killed 12 people, injured hundreds, and rendered many homeless.

Two consecutive earthquakes struck Davao on October 10, one at 9:43 a.m. with a magnitude of 7.4 and another at 7:12 p.m. with a magnitude of 6.7–6.8. The epicenter was located in the Philippine Trench near the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental. The tremors were felt throughout the entire Mindanao island and as far as Leyte island. From then until October 13, the Davao regions experienced more than 1,200 aftershocks. According to Philvocs (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology), the situation of the quake victims could worsen from landslides caused by continuous rainfall. About 5,000 families have currently been forced to stay in evacuation centers.

On October 12, newly elected ACT president Teacher Rubs Bernardo visited Davao City personally to check on the situation of earthquake affected teachers and residents. Her visit coincided with the relief operation conducted by Tulong Guro.
