Teachers demand rehabilitation of schools in Cordillera
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers-Cordillera expressed grave concern over typhoon Uwan’s severe destruction of schools in the region.
According to the group, the administration and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) must allocate ₱20,000 as immediate aid to teachers, staff, and retirees. It also calls for the rehabilitation of damaged school buildings for the safety and welfare of teachers and students.
Department of Education-Cordillera data showed the typhoon destroyed up to 200 classrooms. Sixteen were completely destroyed, 45 sustained major damage, and 123 suffered minor damage. Many schools were also flooded, some had roofs blown away, and others lost educational materials.
In Kalinga, flooding and landslides adversely affected 12 schools, damaging their sanitation facilities, chairs, and computers. Most schools in the province are currently being used to shelter displaced families.
The group is calling for immediate financial aid and compensation for affected teachers and staff. It stated that a long-term infrastructure plan is necessary to ensure that schools remain resilient to disasters and calamities.
Corrupt officials directly responsible for poor structures and failed flood control projects that led to severe damage and the deaths of nineteen individuals in Cordillera must also be held accountable, according to ACT.
