Urban poor group condemns demolition of Laguna community

,

The Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap-Southern Tagalog (Kadamay-ST) condemned the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for its plan to demolish houses along NIA Road Purok 7 in Barangay Pooc, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. The demolition allegedly aims to make way for the agency’s road paving project. It was set to begin on November 18.

According to Barangay Pooc officials, DPWH plans to proceed with the delayed project and will demolish 12 houses per week. The operation will displace hundreds of residents without a definite relocation plan.

Kadamay-ST said residents went to the barangay officials on the morning of November 18 to request a dialogue. The captain and other officials refused to face the residents. Officials also reportedly blamed the residents for failing to prepare for the demolition.

Residents also met with the Santa Rosa City Urban Development and Housing Office (CUHDO) on the same day. The local agency denied that a demolition had been scheduled. The office also distanced itself from the issue, saying it could not provide relocation for those who would be displaced since the project was under the national agency DPWH.

The group said the community had already approached Sta. Rosa Mayor Arlene Arcillas several times to request a dialogue. Like other officials, the mayor has not given any clear response.

Kadamay-ST called for support and solidarity from various organizations and sectors to stop the demolition and protect the communities and residents along NIA Road. Bayan Muna Southern Tagalog expressed its support for the urban poor community’s campaign.
