Youth groups hold protest to push for Sara Duterte impeachment
Student councils, campus newspapers and youth groups in Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila called for the impeachment of vice president Sara Duterte on January 27, led by the newly-convened Leaders and Advocates of the Youth for the Accountability of Sara Duterte (LAYAS Duterte) Networ.
Youth groups which filed a complaint with the House of Representatives for Duterte’s impeachment consisted the LAYAS Duterte Network. The network put forward four demands. Foremost is Duterte’s impeachment for embezzling public funds, mainly confidential funds, and her attempt to deceive the people into presenting fake documents and not attending hearings.
Second, the network is pushing for Congress to immediately respond to their impeachment complaint, which was filed in December 2024. Third, they called for the scrapping, investigation and cessation of the government’s use of confidential funds. Fourth, they call to hold President Ferdinand Marcos Jr accountable as the chief of the corrupt government.
Students and youth from the University of the Philippines, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of Sto. Tomas, De La Salle University, Far Eastern University and other schools in Metro Manila participated in the protest. The action is a preparation for the broader public protest against poverty, corruption, and lack of accountability on January 31 led by the Taumbayan Ayaw sa Magnanakaw at Abusado Network Alliance (TAMA NA).
The youth believe that their future will remain unstable as long as the likes of Duterte and Marcos Jr are in office. They said, it is necessary to unite to regain the future stolen by the corrupt in the government.
Before the protest, TAMA NA and De La Salle University Student Government (DLSU USG) led and held an Educational Stakeholders Media Forum at DLSU Manila on Taft Avenue. Speeches and messages on the program were delivered by Representatives of TAMA NA, ACT Teachers Party-list, Movement Against Tyranny, Rise Up for Life and Rights, ACT Philippines, Adamson University, St. Paul University Manila, University of the Philippines, DLSU USG, LAYAS Duterte Network, National Union of Students of the Philippines, and Kabataan Party-list.
