Bikolanos resist plunder
Led by the Samahan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa San Miguel Bay (SMB), the Tanggol SMB Network was officially established on February 27 in Barangay Sabang, Calabanga, Camarines Sur. The alliance aims to oppose the planned SMB offshore wind projects. According to the group, the project will disposses thousands of fisherfolk of their livelihood. The project also directly attacks food security and the people’s right to access marine resources.
In the province’s other towns, peasants continue to fight for their right to land, hundreds of residents in Barangay San Ramon and Salvacion, Siruma protested on February 18 to condemn the Villafuertes’ landgrabbing.
The Portico Banasi Household Farmers Association asserted their right to residence during a conference held on February 20 at the Bula municipal hall. According to the group, Philippine Commission on Urban Poor representatives and the RTC Branch 31 sheriff defended the landgrabbers instead of hearing them out. Representatives of the Colarinas, Tans, and the Ruby Shelters Builders and Development Corporation did not attend the conference. Throughout the meeting, PNP personnel armed with high-powered rifles roamed inside the building.
