3,000 individuals join second run against corruption
About 3,000 individuals joined the second run against corruption launched by University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman students on campus on November 16. The students and anti-corruption groups called for accountability for all those involved in corruption under the Marcos regime.
This was the second fun run against corruption. The first was launched by the UP Engineering Student Council and the UP Diliman University Student Council (UPD USC) on September 7. According to the two councils, they relaunched the activity because students were disappointed with the state’s inaction. No one had been held accountable or imprisoned after two months since the first run.
The run also aimed to encourage more students and Filipinos to stand and speak out against corruption.
Participants ran around the campus and “chased” individuals wearing masks of Ferdinand Marcos Jr, Sara Duterte, and other corrupt government officials. They symbolically captured these officials and placed them in a mock prison in front of the Oblation Statue.
They also laid tarpaulins on the road for the runners to stomp on. The tarpaulins bore printed faces of Marcos, Duterte, and other corrupt officials.
“Hold all the corrupt accountable. From the top to the bottom… all the thieves in our government,” UPD USC chairperson Joaquin Buenaflor said. He said this should start with the “commanders-in-thief,” referring to Marcos Jr and Duterte.
The activity is in preparation for a bigger people’s protest against corruption called “Baha sa Luneta 2.0,” to be led by the Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK, or People’s Movement Against Corruption). The demonstration will be launched at Luneta Park in Manila, while similar protests will take place in other parts of the country. The group’s main call: “Hold everyone involved accountable!”
