65-year-old political prisoner from Central Luzon dies in jail
Karapatan-Central Luzon called for justice for the death of 65-year-old political prisoner Sonny Tambalque. Tambalque died on May 26 from primary tuberculosis, a treatable illness aggravated by his detention and poor conditions in jail.
Tambalque had been imprisoned for 18 years, and calls for his humanitarian release were relentless considering his old age and illnesses. According to the group, Tambalque was detained on fabricated charges filed by state forces.
The group emphasized, “serving the people and standing up for people’s rights is not a crime.” During nearly two decades of imprisonment, the group stated that “there is no justice. Not in life, and not even in death.”
According to Karapatan’s records, 106 are elderly and 100 are sick among the total 745 political prisoners in the country. “Many have died waiting for justice,” the group said.
Karapatan-Central Luzon extended its condolences to Tambalque’s family. Tambalque is currently laid to rest in his hometown in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.
“After 18 years, this is the only time we are together again, but in this way. I love you so much, Father,” his child lamented in a Facebook post.
“Our support and solidarity to his family are warm embraces of recognition, affirming the life of service and principle that Sonny led,” Karapatan said. The group promised to continue its call for justice and to hold the state accountable for its crimes against Tambalque and all political prisoners.
