BIEN calls out 98 call center companies for risking workers' lives

The BPO Industry Employees Network (BIEN) released a list on November 9 of 98 call center companies that disregard workers’ safety. It concurrently called on the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to protect them from these companies’ policy of forcing them to work amid Super Typhoon Uwan. It said this policy risks their lives just to ensure profits for foreign companies.

“We call on DOLE to act immediately. Call these companies that force their workers to report for work under unsafe conditions,” BIEN stated. DOLE should ensure that no worker faces punishment, fines, or forced leave when they choose safety.

BIEN also demanded that companies suspend operations and grant workers emergency leave with pay during super typhoons.

The named companies are based in Metro Manila, Tarlac, and Pampanga—areas estimated to be severely hit by the typhoon. The list also includes call centers in Iloilo and Cebu, which recently experienced the wrath of Typhoon Tino.
