Democratic groups and sectors launch "Bantay Impeachment"

,

More than 120 representatives of various anti-corruption groups, civic-social organizations, church people, youth, and other sectors gathered on June 13 in Quezon City to launch the “Bantay Impeachment” (Impeachment Watch) campaign. The campaign seeks to push for accountability, transparency, and public participation in the impeachment trials against Vice President Sara Duterte. Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK, or People’s Anti-Corruption Movement) led the campaign launch.

According to the groups, the campaign launch is timely amid uncertainty over the progress of the Senate hearings. Clashes among senators triggered a leadership crisis in the Senate in the past month. The pro-Duterte forces in the Senate attempted to delay, derail, or undermine the impeachment process.

The meeting discussed the objectives and plans of Bantay Impeachment. It will lead education campaigns and community discussions, monitor the impeachment with strategic communications, and mobilize citizens. Meanwhile, they expressed concern over attempts to twist the truth and spread misinformation related to the impeachment.

Some House prosecution team members attended the gathering, including Rep. Joel Chua and Rep. Terry Ridon. Youth Representative Atty. Renee Co, one of the prosecutors’ spokespersons, also participated in the activity. They shared some case details and emphasized the importance of that public vigilance over the hearings.

Bantay Impeachment will roll out forums, discussions, explainers, fact‑checking initiatives, hearing analyses, and coordinated protest actions. They are preparing for a large mobilization on July 6, the scheduled opening of the impeachment hearings.

“The impeachment trial is ultimately about the Filipino people’s right to truth, accountability, and justice,” the organizers said. They added that when public funds are plundered and public trust is broken, ordinary people usually suffer the most.

Bantay Impeachment called on citizens, organizations, institutions, and sectors to join the campaign and actively watch the impeachment process and the holding of officials to account. “As the impeachment trial unfolds, we will watch closely, speak out against attempts to undermine the process, and help ensure that truth and justice prevail,” the organizers said.
