Gabriela Women's Party launches running event against abuse

Women, led by the Gabriela Women’s Party (GWP), launched the Takbo Babae 2025 within the University of the Philippines-Diliman campus on April 13. Hundreds participated in the activity.

“Takbo Babae 2025 is not just a ‘fun run.’ It is a powerful call: Fight Abuse!” current GWP Congress representative and Makabayan Coalition senatorial candidate Rep. Arlene Brosas said.

Brosas added, “This is proof that we rest not amid abuse, we do not close our eyes to oppression, and most importantly, we will not stop unless no more women being oppressed, hurt, and silenced.” She promised to fight for the rights and safety of women, children, LGBTQ+, and the people once elected to the Senate.

According to GWP, their action is a demonstration of their stance against gender-based violence. Prominent personalities such as actresses Ryza Cenon and Barbie Forteza, and Miss Globe runner-up Rowee Lucero, participated in the event.

In GWP’s 21 years of uninterrupted service in Congress (2004-2025), it has passed several important laws to defend women and children rights. These include the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act, which ensures that women and children are protected from domestic violence, sexual abuse, and other forms of violence.

They were also instrumental in the passage of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act in 2003 and the Magna Carta of Women. They played a significant role in the creation and passage of the Rent Control Act (along with the Bayan Muna Party), Juvenile Justice Act, Philippine Nursing Act, and Anti-Torture Law. Currently, they continue to push for other pro-women laws such as the legalization of divorce in the Philippines, especially for women trapped in abusive relationships, and the SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics) Equality Bill.
