Groups condemn Sara Duterte's trip to Australia for pro-Duterte rally
The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan)-Australia and Filipino Australians for Justice, Accountability, and Peace (FAJAP) criticized Vice President Sara Duterte’s visit to Australia which took place from June 18 to June 24. They marched from the Parliament Steps to the State Library in Melbourne, Australia, on June 22 at 4 p.m. as a form of protest.
Duterte went to Australia to campaign and attend the “national action” of Duterte supporters in Melbourne on June 22. The action called for the release of Rodrigo Duterte from detention by the International Criminal Court in The Netherlands, where he is held for charges of crimes against humanity.
“The Filipino people must reject these plunderers and human rights violators,” Bayan-Australia said. The group added that the Australian government should also stand against the entry of individuals like Duterte into their country.
Duterte herself faces an impeachment trial in the Philippines. The groups denounce Duterte’s allies in the Senate for maneuvers to delay and outright dismiss the trial.
During the march, the groups clearly demanded that Duterte be held accountable and convicted for plundering the Filipino people’s funds and other crimes.
“Rodrigo Duterte should definitely be imprisoned and held accountable for his crimes against the Filipino people. We also declare that his daughter Sara Duterte must answer for theft and corruption,” the Anakbayan-Melbourne chairperson said.
