Human rights group condemn AFP for overkill operation in Quezon
Tanggol Quezon condemned what it called an “overkill” focused military operation (FMO) of the 85th IB, 16th IB, and 81st IB under the command of the 201st IBde and 2nd ID that began on April 21 in Quezon. According to the group, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) deployed 2,000 soldiers in four barangays in Lopez for these operations.
“Residents now feel fear and anxiety caused by the large military presence in their communities,” according to the group.
Tanggol Quezon received reports that 2,000 soldiers swarmed the barangays of Cogorin Ibaba, Cogorin Ilaya, Santo Niño Ibaba, and Santa Rosa over six days. In 2020, the census recorded that these barangays’ population was only 2,504. The soldiers encamped in their homes and farms.
The group added that soldiers and police set up numerous checkpoints, hindering livelihoods, farming, and the free movement of residents, and required everyone passing through to present their community tax certificate. “Locals mentioned that there was no orientation when the checkpoints were set up, such as in Barangay Cogorin Ibaba,” said Tanggol Quezon.
The AFP is also rolled into the community large armored vehicles, spreading fear and anxiety among residents. Residents also reported the numerous comings and goings of 6×6 military trucks.
Meanwhile, 85th IB soldiers blocked at a checkpoint and harassed members of Tanggol Quezon humanitarian team sent to investigate the situation in the communities. The soldiers also intimidated locals, barangay watchmen, and barangay officials who ere coordinating with the group for their investigation.
Since December 2024, AFP soldiers had already encamped in civilian homes and (were already in the area)) even before the “overkill” military operation in the barangays,” the group said.
Amid relentless human rights violations, Tanggol Quezon called on the provincial government to investigate the widespread militarization and immediately evict the soldiers who are endangering the safety and livelihood of the people.
