Migrant workers form ONE2WIN in Hong Kong
ONE2WIN (Onethousand2hundred Wage Increase Network) was successfully established in Hong Kong by 50 organizations that attended a Leaders’ Kapihan led by Migrante Hong Kong on June 29.
During the gathering, participants discussed major issues migrant workers and Filipino families in Hong Kong face. Major topics included pushing for the enactment of a ₱1,200 National Minimum Wage in the Philippines and a HK$6,172 living wage for migrant workers in Hong Kong.
The meeting also discussed the campaign to open the Philippine Consulate on Saturdays and the PhilHealth scheme that exploits migrant workers. The group also talked about the recent success in scrapping the Mandatory SSS for Filipino migrant workers leaving the Philippines for the first time.
During the gathering, the Mission for Migrant Workers shared results of their survey, “Where did our wages go?” They also discussed the basic rights of migrants and ways to address discrimination and slave-like treatment of migrant workers.
Before closing, the leaders drafted a resolution regarding pressing migrant and Filipino family issues. The group also agreed to create a unified statement and a Letter of Appeal to different levels of the Philippine government to push for and support the call for a living wage, as well as to the Hong Kong government regarding the Living Wage Campaign for migrant domestic workers.
